Though music therapists often work with persons with disabilities (PWD), one may not realize the full extent of marginalization and discrimination of PWD. PWD make up 26% of the US population, and yet are frequently discriminated against in all facets of life.
What can we do to help our clients beyond the therapy room? How can we change our daily habits and language to be more inclusive and respectful? Are we causing harm in the way we conduct business?
These questions and more will be examined alongside disability rights history and its current state. For disability rights is a civil rights issue, and we must take action to help our clients and ourselves.

Dr. Anita Swanson has been an immensely impactful presence within each stage of my professional life. Dr. Anita Swanson is an internationally recognized credentialed music therapist, researcher, author and scholar whose work has been presented at numerous conferences around the world. She has given countless hours to advancing the discipline of music therapy in her board and service work, such as with the World Federation of Music Therapy, the American Association of Music Therapy and as an editorial review board member. In particular, for the WFMT, Dr. Swanson spearheaded the creation of an International Music Therapy Day and was instrumental in moving the organization’s social media reach forward. Further she was a dedicated WFMT officer who held a leading role in the strategic plan formation 2014-2017 and who volunteered on countless committees. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate music therapy students and has mentored many young and aspiring pre professionals and is well respected by her students.
About the Instructor
Anita Swanson, Ph.D., MT-BC, serves as the President of the World Federation Of Music Therapy. She is also Project Coordinator, Texas Technology Access Program at The University of Texas at Austin. In this role, she helps students achieve more by assessing where they are, what motivates them, and acknowledging where there is room to grow. She helps to unlock their potential by creating inclusive environments and utilizing universal design principles to help them thrive. Breaking goals down via task analysis makes each step achievable and a reason to celebrate.
